Ήταν επίσης μεταδιδακτορικός συνεργάτης της Σχολής Οδοντιατρικής της Hadassah του Εβραϊκού Πανεπιστημίου (1991-1993). Από το 1995 εργάζεται ως Ερευνητής στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο Θαλάσσιων Ερευνών, όπου από το 2008 κατέχει τη θέση του Διευθυντή Ερευνών (στο σημερινό Ινστιτούτο Θαλάσσιων Βιολογικών Πόρων και Εσωτερικών Υδάτων).

Έχει συμμετάσχει σε 31 Ερευνητικά και Αναπτυξιακά Έργα, σε 13 ως επιστημονικός συντονιστής ή / και υπεύθυνος έργου. Έχει συγγράψει 30 επιστημονικές δημοσιεύσεις και έχει συμμετάσχει με περισσότερες από 60 εισηγήσεις σε επιστημονικά συνέδρια.

Ήταν μέλος του Συντακτικού Συμβουλίου της Ηλεκτρονικής Εφημερίδας της Ιχθυολογίας και είναι κριτής σε πολλά διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά. Συμμετέχει ως ειδικός στην ομάδα εργασίας της IUCN για ψάρια γλυκού νερού.

Για αρκετά χρόνια υπήρξε ο Ταμίας και ο Πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ιχθυολογικής Εταιρείας. Διετέλεσε επίσης Γραμματέας της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Ερευνητών και σήμερα είναι ο Πρόεδρός της.
